Why another charity was deregistered in February this year (2015). There were a few issues, the biggest of these was a failure in their duties to comply with the ACNC Governance standards.
There were a few issues, the biggest of these was a failure in their duties to comply with the ACNC Governance standards.
It’s important that registered charities fully understand that they must comply with the ACNC Governance Standards.
This is not a just another best practices standards document that you can choose to use, or not. The standards are supported by legislation that gives the ACNC the power to take action if you don’t comply. The important thing is that you have to demonstrate through evidence, that you comply, or have taken steps to comply with these standards.
There are a number of legal blogs that tell you about the standards and the ACNC website provides information on what these standards are but I’m hearing you – what you really want is some practical information, tools and templates that you can use to help you with this.
So over a series of 6 blogs, I’m going to take you through simple things you can do and I’m going to give you templates and tools you can use to help you.
I’m going to be focussing on best practice tools and actions and by that, I mean ones that comply, add benefit to your organisation and actually do work in practice – not just a piece of paper that no-one uses or some theoretical approach that doesn’t work!
Your first step is to understand what these standards are.
Standard 1: Purposes and not-for-profit nature
Standard 2: Accountability to members
Standard 3: Compliance with Australian laws
Standard 4: Suitability of responsible persons
Standard 5: Duties of responsible persons
In the next blog, we explain what Standard 1 means and we’ll talk about simple actions and simple tools you can use for each of these standards.
In the meantime, update your knowledge on these standards, find some basic templates you may not have (like sample agendas) and undertake a charity health check using the below resource links.
